will be 8:3O-9:3O a.m. at the Rodeo Pavilion on the north end of the
rodeo grounds on Monday, September 7th.

will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The event has grown significantly
each year with over 300 contestants last year and a crowd of over
1,500. The admission to Lil’ spurs is just the cost of a $4.00
Rodeo Button, on sale now throughout Fort Madison area businesses,
the Rodeo ticket office. and at the gates of the Lil’ Spurs
Rodeo.
Two of the spectator’s favorite events are the
Stick Horse Barrel Race Contest and Mutton Bustin’. In the
Stick Horse Barrel Race, children ages 3 - 5 will ride pretend horses
(furnished by the rodeo) through a designated course and Mutton
Busters, ages 7 and under, will show their talents by hanging on and
riding a fat, wooly sheep for 6 seconds. Those events are judged with
top rated cowpokes invited to ride again during the Tri-State Rodeo
performances.
The Goat Tail Tie contest is for children ages
7 - 9 with contestants vying for the best times to tie a ribbon
around an elusive goat’s tail. The top 6 contestants will
compete again in the Lil’ Spurs Finals, during the Thursday
night, ‘family night’ Rodeo performance at the Tri-State
Rodeo.
The Calf Riding contest is for children ages 9 - 14
and is also a timed and judged event. The finals for this event will
take place on Monday immediately following the Lil’ Spurs
Rodeo.
There are also two group events which always entertain
the crowd. The Greased Pig contest and the Calf Scramble contest.
These events are available in 3 age categories, age 6 - 8, 9 - l0, or
11 - 14.
The top performers for each event will receive a
silver belt buckle commemorating the event.
